Cow Cookies - by C. F. Button

When a local environmental activist turns up dead in the remote eastern Oregon desert and cut fences lure livestock to a waterless trap not far away, the connection is obvious. But small town rumors of the investigation and disparate clues linking a series of cattle deaths lead a BLM wildlife biologist to look beyond the obvious.
Tom Kreuger, the main character, is a biologist working for the Bureau of Land Management, a federal agency managing desert rangelands in thirteen states west of the Mississippi River. Detective work is certainly not a part of his job, a source of irritation and conflict for his employers and law enforcement officials. His co-workers and friends variously aid or deride this activity. Tom is a transplant from the Midwest, firmly embedded in small-town western culture. Like many of the older inhabitants, he is rudely opinionated, defiantly independent, and reluctantly coping with social and technological change.
With a roguish sense of human frailty and dishonesty developed through constant practice, Tom follows a trail of clues to the canyon lands of Utah and Colorado, seeking to bind rumor, speculation and careful observation of arcane evidence. Unfortunately for Tom, his penchant for blundering headlong after unsolved riddles leads him directly to a clever and dangerous criminal. The dance of deception and intrigue becomes a battle of endurance, will, and luck.
It's a story with wit, satire, and a gripping finale that will make it hard to put down and leave you eager for the next tale.
